200 Million Years in the Making. From the Swiss Alps to Your Kitchen.
Peter Kofitsas | Culinary Ambassador, Sel des Alpes USA
I'm honored to introduce you to Sel des Alpes Swiss Fine Alpine Salt—an extraordinary ingredient with a remarkable 200-million-year story.
And I'd like to share why this collaboration means so much to me.
Why I Chose Sel des Alpes
For more than 30 years, my quest has been to find the best ingredients on the planet, bring them into my own kitchen, cook with my mom, my brother, and my three children, and then share what I've learned with YOU.
In 30 years, Sel des Alpes is the first brand I have ever formally represented.
That is not a decision I take lightly.
I recently traveled to Switzerland to experience firsthand where this remarkable salt comes from. I visited the mines and production facilities, met the people behind Sel des Alpes, learned about their commitment to quality and tradition, and even had the pleasure of cooking for their team.
What impressed me most wasn't simply the salt. It was the people—their pride, their conscientious approach to their work, and their respect for a remarkable Swiss heritage.
I came home with more than an appreciation for an exceptional ingredient. I came home with a story I genuinely wanted to share with you.
Through my cooking reels, retreats, and presentations to companies, school districts, brands, and events around the world, I'm honored to introduce you to Sel des Alpes.
Because my mission has always been about something bigger than food.
It's about helping us tap into our BEST SELVES—finding purpose, enjoying life, looking and feeling our best, and sharing what we learn with the children in our lives.
That's what my FOCUS • FOOD • FITNESS — The Best Self Experience is all about.
And now, I'd like to introduce you to the extraordinary ingredient and the people who inspired this collaboration.
So, What Makes This Salt So Special?
To answer that question, we have to go back approximately 200 million years.
Long before the Swiss Alps rose to their majestic heights, ancient seas covered parts of what is now Switzerland.
As these ancient waters evaporated, they left behind vast mineral deposits, including salt.
Over millions of years, powerful geological forces folded and lifted layers of the Earth's crust, eventually creating the magnificent Alpine landscape we recognize today.
Deep within these mountains, ancient salt deposits remained protected within layers of rock.
Today, Sel des Alpes brings this extraordinary geological heritage into our kitchens.
Think about that. You're seasoning your food with an ingredient whose story began approximately 200 million years ago.
For me, that's one of the beautiful things about cooking. Every ingredient has a story, and some stories are truly extraordinary.
But there's another reason this ancient Alpine origin caught my attention.
The Ancient Sea
Approximately 200 million years ago, the story began in an ancient sea.
Preserved in Rock
Salt deposits were preserved deep within Alpine rock.
The Swiss Alps Today
Millions of years of geological change created today's Alpine landscape.
Ancient Origins. Exceptional Purity.
One of the most fascinating characteristics of Sel des Alpes is its origin.
Unlike salt harvested directly from today's oceans, Sel des Alpes comes from ancient salt deposits sheltered within the Swiss Alps for millions of years.
These deposits formed long before modern industrial activity and many of the environmental pollutants associated with it.
That ancient origin is part of what makes this salt so intriguing to me. While the age of the deposits doesn't by itself establish that the finished salt is free of all contaminants, it offers a remarkable connection to the natural history of the Alps.
I care deeply about what goes into my food, where ingredients come from, and how they're produced.
My philosophy is simple: seek exceptional ingredients, understand their origins, and use them thoughtfully.
And as important as the ingredient itself is, I also want to know the people responsible for bringing it to our tables.
A Swiss Tradition. Thoughtful Stewardship.
During my visit to Switzerland, I had the privilege of spending time with the people behind Sel des Alpes.
I explored the historic salt mines, toured the production facilities, learned about the process, and even cooked a special meal for the team.
I also learned about their use of hydroelectric energy and their approach to responsible resource management.
But what stayed with me most was the pride these people take in their work.
Their commitment to Swiss heritage, respect for tradition, and thoughtful approach to production made a lasting impression on me.
When I recommend an ingredient, I want to know more than how it tastes. I want to know where it comes from, how it's produced, and who stands behind it.
Meeting the Sel des Alpes team gave me that opportunity.
And now comes my favorite part—bringing this remarkable ingredient into the kitchen.
